Presentation: Paraguay & Nuclear Rapprochement between Argentina and Brazil at the AmAnthro2018 Conference
Did you know: Paraguay helped bring atomic peace between military rivals Argentina and Brazil?
In the 1980s, Argentina and Brazil did something unprecedented: instead of escalating a nuclear weapons arms race, the military rivals quit their weapons programs & formed a binational nuclear cooperation. This was a big deal (counterexample: India vs Pakistan). And in this, Paraguay had a small but CRUCIAL role via Itaipú Binational Dam. Yes: hydroelectricity led to nuclear peace between the hostile giants of South America.
This is what I’m presenting on at the American Anthropological Association Meeting in San José, CA.
